Conversion rate optimization pricing: what CRO costs, and why

Conversion rate optimization pricing depends on what you need: how much of the site is in scope, how much traffic you have to test with, who builds the changes and how long the work runs. Convertica's CRO audit is free, and CRO advisory and full implementation are both priced after your audit, quoted on what the audit finds. Below: what drives the cost, how CRO engagements are priced, and what to ask any provider before you sign.

Short answer

Conversion rate optimization pricing depends on scope, traffic and testing volume, the depth of research, who builds the changes, whether you need an audit or ongoing work, and how long the engagement runs. Convertica's CRO audit is free, and CRO advisory and full implementation are both priced after your audit, based on what it finds.

  • A price range drawn from other people's projects says little about yours, so Convertica publishes no price figures.
  • CRO is usually sold as a one-off audit, a monthly retainer, a test-based program, a performance-based fee or an in-house team.
  • Design, development, tracking fixes, tools and your team's time are costs that sit around any fee.
  • CRO is worth paying for when a realistic improvement is worth more than its full cost, including your team's time.
  • Treat a guaranteed lift, promised before anyone has looked at your data, as a warning sign.

How much does CRO cost?

The cost of conversion rate optimization (CRO) depends on five things: how much of the site is in scope, how much traffic you have for testing, who designs and builds the changes, whether you need a one-off audit or ongoing work, and how long the engagement runs. Two sites can ask for "CRO" and need very different amounts of work.

Most conversion rate optimization services pricing guides answer this question with a table of ranges. This page does not, on purpose. A range drawn from other people's projects tells you little about yours, because the drivers below change from site to site. A quote you can rely on comes after someone has looked at your site, your data and your team.

That is how Convertica prices its own work. The free CRO audit comes first and costs nothing. If you want help acting on it, Convertica quotes CRO advisory or full implementation after your audit, based on what the audit finds. No price figures are published on this site. Agencies that offer these to their clients as white label CRO services follow the same rule.

How Convertica's conversion rate optimization pricing works

Convertica's conversion rate optimization pricing has two parts: the CRO audit is free, and what comes after it, CRO advisory or full implementation, is priced after your audit. There is no hidden tier and no other offer to ask about. The order is always the same: audit first, then a quote only if you want help.

  1. Run the free audit

The free CRO audit is an app that checks your page for people and for AI agents. Enter your website and email on the CRO audit page, and watch it run live on your page.

  2. Get your report by email

The free report gives your overall score, all eight check scores and three fixes you can make now, and Convertica emails it to you. It costs nothing, and there is no call and no card. The full report, $97, has every finding, including the high impact ones, with how to implement each fix.

  3. Fix what you can yourself

Many findings are clear fixes your own team can make. The 10-step CRO audit guide shows how to go further on your own, using your analytics.

  4. Ask for a quote if you want help

CRO advisory is led personally by founder Kurt Philip, with Convertica's CRO team. It has no fixed price: Convertica quotes it after your audit, based on what the audit finds and what your site needs. Places are limited: up to 10 advisory clients at a time. If you would rather not build the changes, ask about full implementation instead: Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit, quoted the same way.

If you're looking to increase conversions, then you need to get in touch folks at Convertica. Kurt was a pioneer in the CRO space and team that he's built are quick and efficient. Can't recommend them highly enough!

What affects the cost of CRO?

Six factors set the cost of CRO work: scope, traffic and testing volume, the depth of research, who implements the changes, whether the work is an audit or ongoing, and how long the engagement lasts. Each one changes how many hours of skilled work the job needs, which is what any CRO price is really made of.

Scope: how much of the site is in play

One landing page is a smaller job than a full store with category pages, product pages, cart, checkout and account flows. Each extra funnel, language, device layout or customer type adds pages to review and journeys to map. Ask whether a quote covers the whole site or named pages only.

Traffic and testing volume

Traffic decides how many A/B tests a site can run and how quickly each one reaches a reliable result. Every test needs a hypothesis, a design, a build, quality checks, a sample size set in advance and analysis at the end. More tests mean more of that work, so a program built around testing scales with your traffic. The A/B test sample size calculator shows how many visitors a single test needs on your numbers.

Depth of research

A review of the page by an expert is quicker than research that adds analytics deep dives, session recordings, heatmaps, on-site polls, customer surveys and interviews. Deeper research takes longer, but it is also what makes test ideas more likely to win. Ask which sources of evidence a provider will use.

Who implements the changes

Design and development are often the largest hidden part of CRO. Some providers design, code and launch every change. Others advise and leave the build to your team. Convertica offers both: CRO advisory, where your team builds, and full implementation, where Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit. If your team builds, its time is part of the real cost, even though it never appears on the provider's invoice.

Audit or ongoing work

An audit is a defined piece of work that ends in a prioritized list of fixes and tests. Ongoing CRO continues after that: running tests, reading results, updating the plan and keeping a record of what was learned. An audit tells you what to do; ongoing work is doing it, month after month.

Length of the engagement

CRO gets better with time, because each test result informs the next idea. Short engagements spend a larger share of their time on setup and research. Longer ones spend more of it on testing. Check the minimum term, the notice period and what you keep if you stop.

CRO pricing models: how engagements are priced

CRO is usually sold in one of five ways: a one-off audit, a monthly retainer, a test-based program, a fee tied to results, or an in-house team you employ. Each model puts the cost and the risk in a different place, so the right one depends on your traffic, your team and how long you plan to keep optimizing.

In-house teamSalaries, tools and management timePeople who know your business and stay with itLarge sites that test all year roundHiring time, and keeping specialist skills in the team

Hourly consulting also exists, often for a second opinion on a test plan or results. Convertica's CRO advisory sits between an audit and a retainer: senior direction after your free audit, with your team doing the build. Full implementation is the other route: Convertica's team does the build. For a fuller comparison of agencies, consultants and audits, see conversion rate optimization services.

What does a CRO audit cost?

Convertica's CRO audit is free. Elsewhere, a CRO audit cost is usually a one-off fee set by scope: how many pages and funnels are reviewed, which data sources are used and whether the report includes a test plan. Doing a CRO audit yourself costs your time plus any tool subscriptions. For an online store, the ecommerce CRO audit guide sets out the steps from collection page to checkout.

The useful question is what a given audit can see. Convertica's free audit app reads the page the way a visitor and an AI agent would. It cannot see your analytics, so it cannot tell you where your real visitors drop off. For that, the 10-step CRO audit guide walks through the work with your own data.

What a do-it-yourself audit costs

  • Time. A careful first pass usually takes a few days of focused work.
  • Tools. Analytics, a heatmap and session recording tool, a way to poll visitors, and a speed test. Some have free plans.
  • Traffic. Enough recordings and survey answers to see patterns, which takes longer on a quieter site.

Is CRO worth the cost for your site?

CRO is worth paying for when the value of a realistic improvement in conversions is larger than the full cost of getting it, including your team's time. You can estimate that with your own numbers before you speak to any provider, so you judge a quote against your site rather than someone else's.

  1. Find your current conversion rate. Conversions divided by visitors, for the same period. The conversion rate calculator does the sum.
  2. Put a value on one conversion. Average order value for a store, or the value of a lead or signup for everyone else.
  3. Work out what a small change is worth. Monthly visitors, times a modest change in conversion rate, times the value of a conversion. Use a change you would be pleased with, not a headline figure.
  4. Add up the full cost. The provider's fee, plus your team's time to build and review changes, plus tools.
  5. Check your traffic can test. If a single A/B test would take months to reach a reliable result, start with clear fixes and research rather than a testing program.

No one can promise a result before the work is done, and any provider who guarantees a lift is guessing. Convertica's CRO case studies show what specific tests did for specific sites, each with its metric, timeframe and source.

Costs of CRO that are easy to miss

The fee is rarely the whole cost of CRO. Plan for the work that sits around it: building and checking changes, fixing tracking, tool subscriptions, the time your team spends reviewing and approving, and the traffic each test uses while a weaker version runs.

  • Design and development. Every change has to be designed, built and checked on real devices, by someone.
  • Tracking fixes. If analytics does not match real orders or leads, it has to be fixed before any result can be trusted.
  • Tools. Testing, heatmap, recording and survey tools. Ask whether a provider's fee includes them or expects you to pay for them.
  • Internal time. Briefings, reviews and approvals from your team, legal or brand owners.
  • Traffic spent on tests. While a test runs, part of your traffic sees a version that may lose. That is the price of knowing what works.

What to ask any CRO provider before you sign

Before you sign with any CRO provider, ask what is in scope, who does the work, who builds the changes, how tests are planned and judged, how results are measured, what tools are included, and what you keep when the work ends. Clear answers matter more than the size of the fee.

  1. Exactly which pages, funnels and devices does the price cover?
  2. Who will work on our site, and how senior are they?
  3. What research happens before the first test goes live?
  4. Who designs and builds the changes, and is that in the price?
  5. How many tests can our traffic support, and how do you set sample size and test length before a test starts?
  6. How do you handle a test that loses or shows no clear result?
  7. Do you measure success by revenue or leads, or by clicks?
  8. Which tools do you use, and who pays for them?
  9. What is the minimum term and notice period, and do we keep the research, test records and documentation if we stop?
  10. Will you check whether AI agents and AI search can read our prices, products and policies?
  11. Can you show case studies with the metric, timeframe and source for each result?

Warning signs

  • A guaranteed lift, or a percentage promised before anyone has looked at your data.
  • Testing starts with no research behind the ideas.
  • Tests are stopped as soon as they look like winners.
  • Reports count clicks and tests run, not revenue or leads.

I was very impressed by how specific and to the point Convertica was in their audit. They really don't beat around the bush and they provide you with clear objectives that will improve your conversion rates and provide you a return on your investment.

Pricing questions

How does Convertica's conversion rate optimization pricing work?

In two parts. The Convertica CRO audit is free: it is an app that runs live on your page, and Convertica emails you the report. CRO advisory is priced after your audit, and so is full implementation: Convertica quotes either one based on what your audit finds. No price figures are published.

How much does CRO cost?

It depends on the site. The cost of CRO is set by scope, traffic and testing volume, the depth of research, who builds the changes, whether you need an audit or ongoing work, and how long the engagement runs. Convertica does not publish price ranges, because a range from other projects says little about yours. Its CRO audit is free, and advisory and full implementation are quoted after it.

What does a CRO audit cost?

Convertica's CRO audit is free. Enter your website and email on the CRO audit page, and watch it run live on your page. Elsewhere, a CRO audit is usually a one-off fee set by scope. Doing a CRO audit yourself costs your time plus any tool subscriptions, such as heatmap and survey tools.

How much does CRO cost after the audit?

CRO advisory is priced after your audit, quoted on what your audit finds, so there is no fixed monthly CRO cost on this page. Founder Kurt Philip personally leads the advisory, with Convertica's CRO team, and places are limited. Full implementation, where Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit, is priced after your audit too.

Why doesn't Convertica publish prices?

Because the right amount of work depends on what your audit finds. The free CRO audit comes first, and CRO advisory or full implementation is quoted after it, based on your site, your traffic and your team. A quote made before anyone has looked at your site would be a guess.

What affects the cost of CRO?

Six things: how much of the site is in scope, how much traffic you have for testing, how deep the research goes, who designs and builds the changes, whether you need an audit or ongoing work, and how long the engagement runs. With Convertica's advisory your team builds, so design and development time is yours to plan for. With full implementation, Convertica's team does the build, quoted after your audit.

Is a one-off audit or a monthly retainer better?

Start with an audit if you do not yet know what is holding your site back. It ends in a prioritized list of fixes and tests. Ongoing work, such as a retainer or advisory, makes sense once you have that list and the traffic and team to act on it.

Does the price include design and development?

It depends on the offer. With CRO advisory, your team or developer builds the changes. With full implementation, Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit, quoted after the audit. With any provider, ask whether design, development and testing tools are in the fee, because they are often the largest part of the real cost of CRO.

Is CRO worth paying for if my traffic is low?

Often, but not as a testing program. With low traffic, an A/B test can take months to reach a reliable result, so the value comes from research and clear fixes rather than tests. The free A/B test sample size calculator shows how long a test would take on your numbers.

Is the free CRO audit really free?

Yes. The free CRO audit is an app, and it costs nothing. There is no call and no card: enter your website and email, and watch it run live on your page.

Who does the work?

The free CRO audit is an app. CRO advisory is led personally by founder Kurt Philip, with Convertica's CRO team, and your team builds the changes. With full implementation, Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit.
