Short answer

On Shopify's Basic plan in the US, Shopify Payments takes 2.9% + 30¢ of each online card sale, so a $50.00 order costs $1.75 and you net $48.25. Higher plans charge less per sale but more a month. With another payment provider, Shopify adds a 2% to 0.2% third-party fee by plan.

  • Shopify Payments online card rates in the US run from 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic to 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus; in person they run from 2.6% + 10¢ to 2.3% + 10¢.
  • An international card adds 1% to the online rate on every plan, as Shopify's pricing page lists it.
  • Using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments adds Shopify's third-party transaction fee on top of the provider's own fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus.
  • A higher plan pays for itself only above a number of orders a month: at $50.00 a sale, Grow costs less in all than Basic from 661 orders a month on monthly billing.
  • The fee comes out of gross profit, not revenue: at a 40% margin, the $1.75 fee on a $50.00 sale is 8.75% of the $20.00 gross profit.

How are Shopify fees calculated?

Shopify fees on a sale are a percentage of the sale plus a fixed fee, set by your plan and by how the card is taken. A US store on Basic paid online through Shopify Payments pays 2.9% + 30¢. The monthly plan price is a separate fixed cost. The calculator above opens on this illustrative sale.

  1. A customer pays $50.00 online with a standard card, on the Basic plan.
  2. The percentage part: $50.00 × 2.9% = $1.45.
  3. Add the fixed $0.30: the fee is $1.75, 3.50% of the sale.
  4. You net $50.00 - $1.75 = $48.25 from the sale.
  5. Over a month of 200 such orders, the fees are $350.00; add the $39.00 plan price for $389.00 in all, 3.89% of $10,000.00 in sales.

Shopify's pricing page publishes no rounding rule. This calculator rounds each fee to the nearest cent, half up, so a payout can differ by a cent.

How to use the Shopify fee calculator

  1. Choose your plan. The card rate, the third-party fee and the plan price fill in from Shopify's US figures.
  2. Choose how the payment is taken. Online with a standard or premium card, in person with a card reader, keyed in by hand, or another payment provider.
  3. Enter the sale amount. Say whether the card was issued outside the US for an online sale.
  4. Check the rates. Change any of them if your Shopify admin shows something else. For another provider, enter its rate and fixed fee.
  5. Add your orders a month. Optional: the result adds the plan price, shows a month and a year, and lists every plan side by side.

Shopify's help center page on third-party transaction fees says PayPal is exempt when Shopify Payments is your main provider.

Not in this calculator: the pricing page does not say which cards count as premium, and lists no currency conversion charge, chargeback fee or US sales tax on the plan, so none of those are preset. How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

Shopify takes $3.20 from a $100 online card sale on Basic through Shopify Payments, which leaves $96.80, and less on each higher plan. In person with a card reader it takes $2.70 on Basic. With another provider, Shopify's own cut is the third-party fee alone, before the provider charges anything.

What is the Shopify third-party transaction fee?

The Shopify third-party transaction fee is a percentage Shopify charges on each sale paid through a payment provider other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. You pay it on top of the provider's own fee, so the two add up.

  1. Take a $50.00 sale on Basic through a provider that charges, for this illustration, 2.9% + 30¢. Its fee is $1.75.
  2. Shopify adds 2% of $50.00: $1.00.
  3. The fees are $2.75 and you net $47.25, against $48.25 through Shopify Payments at 2.9% + 30¢.

Choose "Another payment provider" in the calculator and enter your provider's real rate to compare the two for your store.

Which Shopify plan costs less for my store?

The Shopify plan that costs less is the one with the lowest fees plus plan price for your orders. A higher plan charges less per sale but more a month, so it wins only above a number of orders. At $50.00 a sale, Grow costs $66.00 more a month than Basic and saves $0.10 a sale, so it costs less from 661 orders a month.

The point moves with the sale size: bigger orders save more per sale on a higher plan, so they reach it sooner. Plans also differ in staff accounts, reports and features, which this table does not price. Put your own order size and count in the calculator to see every plan side by side.

How do Shopify fees affect my profit margin?

Shopify fees come out of your gross profit, not out of revenue, so they weigh more the thinner your margin. At a 40% gross margin, a $50.00 sale leaves $20.00 before fees. The $1.75 Basic fee is 3.50% of the sale but 8.75% of that profit, leaving $18.25.

  • Count the fee as a cost. Add it to your product cost in the margin calculator to see the margin that is really left.
  • Count it in a month. The profit calculator takes a payment fee rate with ad spend and overheads.
  • Count it in your ad target. A lower margin after fees raises the return you need on ads: the break-even ROAS calculator works it out from your margin.

A fee cut of a few tenths of a percent from changing plan moves profit far less than the share of visitors who buy. If more of the same visitors buy, every fee and the plan price are spread over more sales. Convertica's free CRO audit checks a Shopify store page for what is likely costing it sales: the first screen, calls to action, trust, mobile, speed and AI agent readiness, ranked by likely impact.
