Short answer

A Stripe fee calculator works out what Stripe keeps from a payment and what reaches you. Stripe's published US rate for a domestic card paid online is 2.9% + 30¢, so a $100.00 charge costs $3.20 and pays out $96.80. To receive $100.00 after the fee, charge $103.30. Every rate can be edited.

  • The fee is the amount times the percentage, plus the fixed fee, rounded to the nearest cent: $100.00 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20.
  • To receive a set amount, divide the amount plus the fixed fee by 1 minus the percentage. Adding the fee on top leaves you short, because the fee is charged on the larger amount.
  • The fixed 30¢ weighs most on small payments: the same rate is 5.90% of a $10.00 charge and 2.96% of a $500.00 charge.
  • International cards, currency conversion and manually entered cards each add a percentage to the card rate.
  • The presets are Stripe's published US rates. Rates change, differ by country and can be negotiated, so check Stripe's pricing page and edit any field.

$100.00 × 2.9% = $2.90. Add the $0.30 fixed fee: $3.20.

Charge $100.00 and you receive $96.80. The fee is 3.20% of the charge.

To receive $100.00 after the fee, charge $103.30: ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.2956, which is $103.30 in whole cents.

How are Stripe fees calculated?

A Stripe fee is a percentage of the amount charged plus a fixed fee for each payment. For a domestic card paid online, Stripe's published US rate is 2.9% + 30¢, so the fee on $100.00 is $100.00 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20. Stripe takes the fee out of the payment, and $96.80 reaches your Stripe balance.

fee = amount * percentage fee + fixed fee
net payout = amount - fee
effective rate = fee / amount * 100

Stripe rounds the fee to the nearest cent: half a cent or more rounds up, less rounds down (Stripe's rounding rules). The calculator rounds the same way. The fee is charged on the whole payment, so tax and shipping you collect are part of the amount.

How to use the Stripe fee calculator

  1. Pick the payment type. It fills in the percentage, the fixed fee and any cap from Stripe's published US rates.
  2. Enter the amount. The result shows the fee, what you receive and the fee as a percentage of the charge.
  3. Tick a surcharge if it applies. An international card, currency conversion or a manually entered card each add a percentage.
  4. Read the reverse answer. The same result shows what to charge so that the amount you entered is what you keep.
  5. Type your own rate. If your account is outside the US or has negotiated pricing, replace the percentage and the fixed fee with yours.

How to calculate a Stripe fee: two worked examples

To calculate a Stripe fee, multiply the amount by the percentage, add the fixed fee, and round to the nearest cent. Subtract the fee from the amount to get the net payout. Both examples use the online card rate of 2.9% + 30¢; the amounts are made up to show the arithmetic.

A $100.00 payment

  1. Percentage part: $100.00 × 2.9% = $2.90.
  2. Add the fixed fee: $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20.
  3. Net payout: $100.00 - $3.20 = $96.80.
  4. Effective rate: $3.20 / $100.00 × 100 = 3.20%. It is above 2.9% because of the fixed 30¢.

A $49.99 payment, where the fee is rounded

  1. Percentage part: $49.99 × 2.9% = $1.4497.
  2. Add the fixed fee: $1.4497 + $0.30 = $1.7497.
  3. Round to the nearest cent: $1.75.
  4. Net payout: $49.99 - $1.75 = $48.24.

How much should you charge to receive a set amount after Stripe fees?

To receive a set amount after Stripe fees, add the fixed fee to the amount you want and divide by 1 minus the percentage fee. To be left with $100.00 at 2.9% + 30¢: ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.2956, so you charge $103.30. Stripe keeps $3.30 and $100.00 reaches you.

charge = (target net + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage fee)
  1. Add the fixed fee to the amount you want to keep: $100.00 + $0.30 = $100.30.
  2. Subtract the percentage from 1: 1 - 0.029 = 0.971.
  3. Divide: $100.30 / 0.971 = $103.2956, which is $103.30 in whole cents.
  4. Check: the fee on $103.30 is $3.30, and $103.30 - $3.30 = $100.00.

The common mistake is to work out the fee on the price and add it on top. The fee on $100.00 is $3.20, but a $103.20 charge has a fee of $3.29, because the percentage now applies to the larger amount. That leaves $99.91, which is $0.09 short.

Because the fee is rounded to a cent, the formula can land a cent away from the smallest charge that works. The calculator checks the cents on either side and shows the smallest charge that leaves at least your target.

The formula tells you what would cover the fee. It does not tell you whether you may add a fee for paying by card: that depends on the card networks' rules and on the law where you and your customer are. This page does not advise on it. Ask Stripe's support before you do.

How much does Stripe charge per transaction in the US?

Stripe's US pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ for each successful domestic card payment made online and 2.7% + 5¢ for one taken in person. ACH Direct Debit is 0.8%, capped at $5.00. The table shows every rate this calculator is preset with, as Stripe published it for US accounts when read on .

Rates also change. Treat the presets as a starting point, check Stripe's pricing page, and type in the rate on your own account if it differs.

What does Stripe add for international cards and currency conversion?

Stripe's US pricing adds 1.5% for international cards, 1% more if currency conversion is required, and 0.5% for manually entered cards. Each is added to the percentage, so an international card paid online is charged at 4.4% + 30¢, and 5.4% + 30¢ with conversion.

How does the ACH Direct Debit cap work?

ACH Direct Debit on Stripe's US pricing is 0.8% of the payment with the fee capped at $5.00. A $100.00 payment costs $0.80. From $625.00 upward the fee stays at $5.00: 0.8% of $1,000.00 would be $8.00, so the fee is $5.00, and you charge $1,005.00 to keep $1,000.00.

Which Stripe fees does the calculator leave out?

The calculator works out the fee on one successful payment. It does not include refunds, disputes, payout options or Stripe's other products. Stripe's support documentation says the processing fee on a payment is not returned when you refund it, so a refund costs you the original fee.

How much is the Stripe fee on $10, $100 or $1,000?

At Stripe's published US rate for a domestic card paid online, the fee is $0.59 on $10.00, $3.20 on $100.00 and $29.30 on $1,000.00. The percentage is the same on each. The fixed 30¢ is not, which is why the fee is 5.90% of the smallest payment and 2.93% of the largest.

$1,000.00$29.30$970.702.93%$1,030.17

The effect is strongest at the bottom. On a $2.00 charge the fee is $0.36, which is 18.00% of the payment. Stripe's minimum charge in US dollars is $0.50 (Stripe's currency documentation), and at that size the $0.31 fee is 62.00% of the charge. If you sell low-priced items, the fixed fee belongs in your pricing, not in a rounding error.

How to estimate Stripe fees on a month of payments

To estimate Stripe fees on a month of payments, apply the percentage to the total charged and the fixed fee to every payment. 200 payments of $50.00 at 2.9% + 30¢: $10,000.00 × 2.9% = $290.00, plus 200 × $0.30 = $60.00, for $350.00 in fees.

You receive $9,650.00. The fees are 3.50% of what you charged.

If that is one month, a year at the same pace is $4,200.00 in fees.

Formula

fees = total charged * percentage fee + number of payments * fixed fee

Stripe rounds each payment's fee on its own, so a real total can differ from this by up to half a cent a payment.

Why the same sales can cost more in fees

The percentage part depends only on the total. The fixed part depends on how many payments it took to get there. Take $10,000.00 in sales: as 1,000 payments of $10.00 it costs $590.00 in fees, and as 100 payments of $100.00 it costs $320.00. The $270.00 difference is all fixed fees.

This is one reason average order value matters to a store with low prices: every item added to an order shares a fixed fee that would otherwise be paid again. The guide to ecommerce metrics covers average order value and where it sits beside conversion rate.

How do Stripe fees change your profit margin?

Stripe fees come out of gross profit, so they take a larger share of your margin than of your price. On a $150.00 order that costs $90.00 to fulfill, the $4.65 fee is 3.10% of the price but 7.75% of the $60.00 gross profit. The margin falls from 40.0% to 36.9%.

  1. Price $150.00, cost $90.00: $60.00 of gross profit, a 40.0% margin.
  2. Stripe fee at 2.9% + 30¢: $4.65.
  3. Profit after the fee: $60.00 - $4.65 = $55.35, a 36.9% margin.
  4. Break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by the margin, moves from 2.50 to 2.71. Ads that looked break-even before the fee lose money after it.

So count the fee as a cost of every order when you work out a margin or an ad target. The margin calculator gives the margin from a cost and a price, the profit calculator takes the other costs out too, and the break-even ROAS calculator turns the margin into the return your ads have to reach.

A fee is not something you can test your way out of, but what it costs you depends on choices you can test. Which payment methods you show at checkout can change both the fee you pay and how many buyers finish paying, and a cheaper method only helps if buyers use it. The guide to checkout optimization covers that side. To find what is costing you orders before they reach the payment step, Convertica's free CRO audit checks your page and ranks the fixes by likely impact.

How to calculate Stripe fees in Excel or Google Sheets

To calculate Stripe fees in Excel or Google Sheets, put the amount in A2 and enter =ROUND(A2*2.9%+0.3,2) for the fee at 2.9% + 30¢. ROUND matters: without it the sheet keeps fractions of a cent that Stripe does not charge, and a column of fees will not add up to your Stripe report. The same formulas work in both programs.

Fees on a column of payments=ROUND(SUM(A2:A500)*2.9%+COUNT(A2:A500)*0.3,2)Percentage on the total, fixed fee on each payment

For the amount to charge, use ROUND and not ROUNDUP. Rounding the formula to the nearest cent always leaves at least the amount you wanted, because Stripe rounds its fee to the nearest cent too. ROUNDUP adds a cent you did not need on about half of all amounts.

Are Stripe fees high?

Whether Stripe fees are high for your business depends on your margin and your order size, not on an average. There is no benchmark on this page for that reason. The useful comparison is the fee against the gross profit on your own typical order, and the same order at any other processor's published rate.

  • Against your margin: divide the fee by the gross profit on the order. In the example above that is 7.75%.
  • Against your order size: read the effective rate in the calculator. Small orders pay proportionally more because of the fixed fee.
  • Against another processor: run the same amount through its published rate. The PayPal fee calculator does that for PayPal.

Stripe fee calculator FAQ

How does the Stripe fee calculator work?

The Stripe fee calculator multiplies the amount by the percentage fee, adds the fixed fee and rounds to the nearest cent. It shows the fee, what you receive and the amount to charge to receive the same sum after the fee. Pick a payment type to fill in Stripe's published US rate, or type your own rate.

How much is the Stripe fee on $100?

$3.20 for a domestic card paid online at Stripe's published US rate of 2.9% + 30¢: $100.00 × 2.9% = $2.90, plus $0.30. You receive $96.80. An international card adds 1.5%, which makes the fee $4.70, and currency conversion adds another 1%, which makes it $5.70.

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

Stripe's US pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ for each successful domestic card payment made online, and 2.7% + 5¢ for a domestic card taken in person. ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% with a $5.00 cap. Rates change, differ by country and can be negotiated, so check Stripe's own pricing page before you rely on a figure.

How do I calculate Stripe fees by hand?

Multiply the amount by the percentage, add the fixed fee, and round to the nearest cent. For a $49.99 card payment online: $49.99 × 2.9% = $1.4497, plus $0.30 is $1.7497, which rounds to $1.75. Subtract the fee from the amount to get what you receive: $48.24.

How much should I charge to receive $100 after Stripe fees?

$103.30 at the online card rate of 2.9% + 30¢. The formula is (amount + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage): ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.2956, which is $103.30 in whole cents. Stripe keeps $3.30 and $100.00 reaches you. Charging $103.20 instead would leave $99.91.

Does Stripe charge more for international cards?

Yes. Stripe's US pricing adds 1.5% for international cards and 1% more if currency conversion is required. On a $100.00 online card payment the fee goes from $3.20 to $4.70 with an international card, and to $5.70 with conversion as well.

What is the Stripe fee for ACH payments?

Stripe's US pricing lists ACH Direct Debit at 0.8% with a $5.00 cap, for standard settlement timing. A $100.00 payment costs $0.80. From $625.00 upward the fee stays at $5.00, so a $1,000.00 payment also costs $5.00. Failed and disputed ACH payments carry separate fees on Stripe's pricing page.

Does Stripe refund its fee when I refund a customer?

No. Stripe's support documentation says the processing fees from the original payment are not returned when you refund it. A refund therefore costs you the fee you already paid on the sale. This calculator does not subtract refunds or disputes: it works out the fee on one successful payment.

Does Stripe take 20%?

Not at its published US card rate, which is 2.9% + 30¢ for a domestic card paid online. The fixed 30¢ does make the fee a large share of a very small payment: on a $2.00 charge the fee is $0.36, which is 18.00% of the charge. On $100.00 the same rate takes 3.20%.

Are Stripe fees too high?

That depends on your margin, not on a number someone else publishes. Compare the fee with the gross profit on a sale. On a $150.00 order that costs you $90.00, a $4.65 fee takes 7.75% of the $60.00 gross profit. The same fee on a thinner margin takes a much larger share.

Can I pass the Stripe fee on to my customers?

The calculator shows the amount that would cover the fee: $103.30 to be left with $100.00 at the online card rate. Whether you may add a fee for paying by card depends on the card networks' rules and on the law where you and your customer are. This page does not advise on that. Ask Stripe's support before you do it.

Does Stripe charge a monthly fee?

Stripe's US pricing page describes its standard pricing as pay as you go, with no setup fees and no monthly fees. Some Stripe products are priced separately, such as Billing, Invoicing and Tax, and a custom domain for a hosted payment page has a monthly price. Check Stripe's pricing page for the products you use.

How do I calculate Stripe fees in Excel or Google Sheets?

With the amount in A2, the fee at 2.9% + 30¢ is =ROUND(A2*2.9%+0.3,2) and the payout is =A2-ROUND(A2*2.9%+0.3,2). For the amount to charge so that the sum in A2 is left after the fee, use =ROUND((A2+0.3)/(1-2.9%),2). Swap in your own percentage and fixed fee.

Is this calculator affiliated with Stripe?

No. Convertica is not affiliated with Stripe, and Stripe has not reviewed this page. The preset rates were read from Stripe's own public pricing pages for US accounts, and each one links to its source. Your Stripe Dashboard and Stripe's pricing page are the authority for what you actually pay.
