How to learn CRO: a course, a certificate or practice?

Most people learn CRO through a mix of three things: a structured course for the method, a certificate if an employer or client wants one, and practice on a real website. A course saves time on the order of topics. Practice is where the skill comes from, because every site loses visitors for its own reasons.

If you are new to the subject, start with our guide to conversion rate optimization, which explains what it is and how the process runs. This page is about learning it: which courses and certifications exist, how they differ, and how to study for free using guides, calculators and your own site.

Convertica sells no course or certification, so nothing on this page is ranked, and none of the providers below pays to be listed. We read each provider's own course page and list what that page states. Prices are left out because they change often; check them on the provider's page.

Conversion rate optimization course options compared

The ten conversion rate optimization courses below range from a free 43-minute lesson to a multi-course program with a certificate. They are listed alphabetically by provider. Format, free or paid, certificate and topics are taken from each provider's own course page, read on 28 October 2026; anything a page did not state is marked "not stated".

Shopify Academy's "Conversion Rate Optimization with Shopify" path ranks for this search too, but its page says Shopify Academy closes on 29 October 2026, so it is left out. Course content, formats and certificates change: confirm the details on the provider's page before you enroll.

Is there a free CRO course?

Yes. Three free CRO courses stand out: HubSpot Academy's lesson on implementing conversion rate optimization (about 43 minutes), Simplilearn SkillUp's introduction to website CRO (about 3 hours, with a completion certificate) and Udacity's A/B testing course (5 lessons). Together they cover the basics of the process, page design and test design.

A free course gets you the vocabulary and the order of the steps. What none of them can give you is a site to work on. The free study path further down fills that gap with Convertica's own guides and calculators, and the free CRO audit gives you a real report on a real page to check your own findings against.

LinkedIn Learning's CRO course is part of a paid subscription, but its page offers a free trial month, and the course runs 1 hour 23 minutes.

How to choose a CRO course

To choose a CRO course, match it to what you need to do next, not to its length. Check how deeply it covers research and testing statistics, whether you want live teaching or self-paced video, whether you need a certificate, and whether it asks you to work on a real site. Then read the provider's syllabus line by line.

  • Research before testing. A course that jumps straight to A/B test ideas skips the part that decides whether tests win: finding out why visitors leave, from analytics, recordings, surveys and expert review.
  • Testing statistics. Look for sample size, test length, significance and when to stop a test. Without these, a beginner will call winners that are noise.
  • Live or self-paced. A live day, like the DMA course, gives you questions and answers in the room. Self-paced video fits around work, but only if you finish it.
  • A certificate, if someone asks for one. Five of the ten courses above state a certificate. If an employer wants a named credential, check which one they recognize first.
  • Your platform and traffic. A store on low traffic needs research and fixes more than advanced testing. A high-traffic product team needs the statistics and the program side.
  • Practice built in. Prefer a course that has you audit or test a real page. If it does not, set yourself that task alongside it.

What is CRO certification, and does it matter?

CRO certification is a certificate a course provider issues when you complete its program, sometimes after quizzes or an exam. There is no licensing body and no single official CRO credential, so a certificate shows that you finished one provider's training. It can help you get an interview; it does not show that your tests were sound.

What hiring managers and clients can check is your work. A short write-up of each project does more than a badge: the page, what the research showed, the change you made, how you tested it and what happened, with the metric and the time period. Published examples of that format are in Convertica's CRO case studies, where every result carries its metric, timeframe and source.

If you do want a certificate, prefer one whose program covers research and statistics in depth, and add it to your profile next to the work, not in place of it.

A free self-study path for learning CRO

You can learn CRO for free by working through the method in order: measurement, research, prioritization, page fixes, then testing. Each step below links a free Convertica guide or calculator, and each ends with a task on a real site. Pair it with any course from the table if you want video teaching alongside.

  1. Learn what you are measuring

Work out your site's conversion rate with the conversion rate calculator, then set up key events using the guide to Google Analytics conversion tracking. Task: confirm every goal event fires once, on desktop and on a phone.

  2. Find where visitors leave

Build a funnel from landing page to goal and look for the step that loses the most people who meant to act. Task: name the one page your funnel points to.

  3. Find out why they leave

Review that page against the CRO checklist, watch how people use it with one of the heatmap tools, and follow the steps of a website audit. Task: write down every problem with its evidence.

  4. Check your findings against an audit

Run the free CRO audit on the same page. It scores the page on eight checks and lists every finding with how to fix it. Task: compare its list with yours and note what each of you missed.

  5. Fix what is clearly broken

Broken forms, missing prices or delivery terms, slow pages and unclear calls to action do not need a test. Use the guides to landing page optimization and conversion copywriting for the page and its words. Task: fix them and note the date.

  6. Learn to test, then test what is uncertain

Read the complete A/B testing guide, size the test with the A/B test sample size calculator, plan its length with the guide on how long to run an A/B test, and read the result with the statistical significance calculator. Task: run one test only if the calculator says you have the traffic.

  7. Write it up and read further

Record each change: the problem, the evidence, the fix, the metric and the period. For theory beyond the method, our list of the best books for conversion rate optimization covers persuasion, testing and copy. Task: keep the log going; it becomes your portfolio.

How long does it take to learn CRO?

The courses above take from about 43 minutes (HubSpot's lesson) to roughly 9 hours of video (Udemy), and CXL's minidegree is a collection of many courses. Finishing a course is the quick part. Learning CRO takes as long as it takes to run the method on real pages several times, and a single A/B test can run for weeks.

The pace depends mostly on access to a site. Someone who can audit, change and test a live site every week learns faster than someone who only watches lessons. If you have no site of your own, offer to audit a friend's or a local business's site for free, and use the study path above as the plan.

Should you learn CRO or have it done?

Learn CRO yourself if you will use it for years: you work in marketing, run several sites or want a CRO career. Have it done if you need one site to convert better soon and your time is worth more elsewhere. Many owners do both: learn the basics, so they can judge the work, and hire for the build.

If you hire, read the guide to choosing a CRO consultant first, and compare that with conversion rate optimization services, where a CRO agency's team builds the fixes rather than advising on them. Either way, what you learn from a course helps you ask the right questions.

Audit and rebuilds

Where Convertica fits

Convertica sells no course. What it offers works for both learners and buyers. The free CRO audit scores any page on eight checks, for people and for AI agents, and gives you every finding with how to fix it: a learner can check their own review against it, and an owner gets a to-do list. If you would rather not build the fixes, the one page rebuild ($497) has Convertica's team build every fix the audit found on that page, and the full site rebuild ($1,997) covers your whole site. Both are set out on the pricing page.

Short answer

A conversion rate optimization course teaches you to find why visitors leave, turn that into hypotheses and test fixes. Free options include a HubSpot Academy lesson, a Simplilearn introduction and Udacity's A/B testing course; paid ones include CXL, Udemy and LinkedIn Learning. Pick by format and depth, then practice on a real site.

  • Ten CRO courses compared on format, free or paid, certificate and topics, each checked on the provider's own page.
  • Free starting points exist: HubSpot Academy, Simplilearn SkillUp and Udacity's A/B testing course.
  • A CRO certificate proves you finished one provider's program; there is no official industry credential.
  • Practice matters more than the course: audit a real page, fix what you find and keep a log of results.
  • If you would rather have the work done, the free CRO audit lists every issue on a page with how to fix it.

Questions about CRO courses

Is there a free conversion rate optimization course?

Yes. HubSpot Academy has a free lesson on implementing conversion rate optimization, Simplilearn SkillUp has a free self-paced introduction to website CRO with a completion certificate, and Udacity has a free A/B testing course. Free written guides and calculators cover the rest of the method, and your own site is the practice ground.

What is CRO certification?

A CRO certification is a certificate a course provider issues when you finish its program, and sometimes pass its quizzes or exam. Examples are the CXL Conversion Optimization Minidegree certificate and the DigitalMarketer Optimization & Testing Mastery badge. CRO has no licensing body or single official credential, so each certificate stands for that provider's program only.

Is a CRO certification worth it?

A CRO certification can be worth it when an employer or client asks for proof of training, or when the structure keeps you studying. It does not show that you can find problems on a real site or run a sound test. Write up a few real tests and fixes, with the numbers, alongside any certificate.

How do I get into conversion rate optimization?

To get into conversion rate optimization, learn analytics first, then research methods, then hypotheses and A/B testing statistics, and practice each step on a real site: your own, an employer's or a friend's. Keep a written log of what you found, what you changed and what happened. That log shows what you can do.

How much does a CRO cost?

It depends on whether you mean a course or the work itself. Course prices change often, so check them on each provider's own page. If you want the work done, Convertica's CRO audit is free, a one page rebuild is $497 and a full site rebuild is $1,997, as set out on the pricing page.

What does a CRO course teach?

A CRO course usually teaches how to find where and why visitors leave (analytics, user research and expert review), how to turn findings into hypotheses and rank them, how to set up and read A/B tests, and the psychology and copywriting behind persuasive pages. Courses differ most in how deeply they cover research and testing statistics.

Does Convertica offer a CRO course?

No. Convertica sells no course or certification. It publishes free CRO guides and calculators, runs a free CRO audit that reports every issue it finds on a page with how to fix it, and offers two fixed-price rebuilds in which its team builds those fixes.

Can I learn CRO without much traffic?

Yes. Research, expert review and fixing clear problems such as broken forms, slow pages or missing information need no minimum traffic. A/B testing does: a test needs enough conversions per variation to give a trustworthy answer. A sample size calculator shows whether your site has enough before you start one.
