Shopify CRO

Shopify CRO for stores that already get traffic

Convertica's Shopify CRO starts with a free CRO audit of your store and continues, if you want, with CRO advisory led by founder Kurt Philip. We find where shoppers leave your Shopify store, from the collection page to the checkout, and what to change in the theme, the apps and the offer. Your developer or Shopify agency builds it, or Convertica's team builds the fixes with full implementation.

Conversion for humans and AI agents. More than 2,000 clients since 2017.

Short answer

Shopify CRO, short for Shopify conversion rate optimization, is the work of turning more of a Shopify store's visitors into buyers. It finds where shoppers drop out between the collection page and the completed checkout, works out why, and fixes or tests changes to the theme, the apps and the offer. Convertica starts with a free CRO audit.

  • Shopify CRO works within the platform's limits: shared theme templates, a checkout Shopify mostly controls, and apps that add scripts.
  • One change to a product template reaches every product, so rank templates rather than single pages.
  • Audit the installed apps, because overlapping or unused apps can slow every page.
  • Build changes in a duplicate theme and judge tests on revenue per visitor.
  • Convertica offers a free CRO audit, then CRO advisory or full implementation, both priced after your audit.

What is Shopify CRO?

Shopify CRO, short for Shopify conversion rate optimization, is the work of turning more of a Shopify store's visitors into buyers. It finds where shoppers drop out between the collection page and the completed checkout, works out why, and fixes or A/B tests changes to the theme, the apps and the offer. The method is the same as any ecommerce CRO, applied within Shopify's limits.

Those limits shape the work. A Shopify store is built from theme templates, so one change to the product template reaches every product. Most of the checkout belongs to Shopify. And apps, which add most features, also add scripts that can slow every page. A Shopify CRO expert knows where the room to improve is, and where it is not worth fighting the platform.

This page covers what Shopify CRO includes, how it works step by step, and how to choose between a Shopify CRO agency and an expert. For the general method, see ecommerce conversion optimization.

How conversion rate optimization pricing works

What does Shopify conversion rate optimization cover?

Shopify conversion rate optimization covers eight areas: the theme templates, collections and search, the product page, the cart and cart drawer, the checkout settings, the apps, store speed, and how AI agents read the store. Most of the gains are found before checkout, because that is where a Shopify store owner has full control. If you are still at the stage of building a successful Shopify store, start with the ten essentials every store needs before it can sell well.

What Shopify CRO covers, and what you can change
AreaWhat to look atHow much you control
Theme templatesThe product, collection, cart and home templates and their sections: what shows, in what order, on a phoneFull: edit in a duplicate theme, then publish
Collections and searchDefault sort order, filters, product cards, empty search resultsFull, within the theme and search app
Product pageImages, variant pickers, subscription options, size and delivery answers, reviews and guarantees near Add to CartFull
Cart and cart drawerShipping cost and free shipping thresholds, discount code box, upsells, the path to checkoutFull

AppsWhich apps load scripts on every page, which ones duplicate each other, and what each one adds to salesFull: install, configure or remove
SpeedTheme weight, app scripts, image sizes and anything that makes the page jump while loadingMostly, through the theme and the apps you keep
Agent readinessProduct structured data, prices and policies in the page HTML, robots rulesMostly, through the theme and its robots.txt template

How Shopify CRO works, step by step

Shopify CRO works in six steps: reconcile Shopify's reports with your other analytics, read the funnel from session to completed checkout by device, find the template that leaks the most revenue, audit the apps, research why shoppers leave, then fix or test the change in a duplicate theme and judge it on revenue per visitor before you publish.

  1. Reconcile your numbers

Shopify's own analytics count sessions and orders one way, and Google Analytics counts them another. Expect some difference, but find out why it exists before trusting either one. Orders in the Shopify admin are the ground truth for revenue.

  2. Read the funnel by device

Shopify's analytics include a conversion funnel showing how many sessions added to cart, reached checkout and completed checkout. Split it by device and traffic source. The step with the biggest drop on mobile is usually the first place to look.

  3. Find the leaking template

Because templates are shared, rank them, not single pages. A weak product template costs you on every product. If one collection or product line converts far worse than the rest, check whether it uses a different template.

  4. Audit the apps

List every installed app, what it does on the storefront, and whether anyone still uses it. Remove what is not earning its place, and check the theme for code left behind by apps you already removed. Fewer scripts usually means a faster store.

  5. Research why shoppers leave

Watch recordings of shoppers who left at the weak step, run a one-question poll on the product or cart page, and read reviews, return reasons and support emails for the questions people ask before buying.

  6. Test in a duplicate theme, judge on revenue

Build changes in a duplicate theme so the live store is never half-edited. A/B test the uncertain ones with a testing tool that supports Shopify themes, set the sample size before you start, and judge the result on revenue per visitor, not only conversion rate. Then publish the winner.

With Convertica, the free CRO audit covers the page-level checks in steps 3 and 5, and advisory helps your team decide what to change and how to read each test. Plan tests with the A/B test sample size calculator and read them with the statistical significance calculator. For a full self-audit, follow the Shopify CRO audit guide.

Common Shopify CRO problems

The most common Shopify CRO problems are app bloat that slows every page, product pages that leave size, delivery or returns questions unanswered, variant pickers that confuse, a cart drawer that hides the shipping cost, and reviews or trust badges loaded late by an app script. Most of them can be fixed in the theme without touching the checkout.

  • Too many apps. Several apps loading scripts on every page, some doing the same job, some no longer used.
  • Unanswered questions. Size, fit, ingredients, delivery dates or returns hidden in tabs or on other pages.
  • Confusing variants. Options that are hard to tell apart, or out of stock combinations that only show after a click.
  • Late surprises in the cart. Shipping costs and free shipping thresholds that appear only at checkout.
  • A discount code box that sends people away. Shoppers leave to search for a code they do not have.
  • Trust far from the button. Guarantees, returns and reviews below the fold or only in the footer.
  • Collections sorted by default, not by sales. Best sellers buried on page two.
  • Mobile friction. No visible Add to Cart after scrolling, pop-ups covering the page, layouts that jump while loading.

For a longer list of tactics to try, read how to increase your Shopify conversion rate. The difference between a tactic list and CRO is evidence: CRO starts with which of these is actually costing your store sales.

Shopify CRO agency or Shopify CRO expert?

Hire a Shopify CRO agency if nobody on your side can edit the theme or set up apps. Work with a Shopify CRO expert or advisory if you already have a developer or Shopify agency, and what is missing is knowing which change to make next and reading the results honestly.

Questions to ask a Shopify CRO agency or expert

  1. Will tests and changes be built in a duplicate theme? Editing the live theme directly risks breaking the store mid-sale.
  2. Which testing tool will you use, and how does it affect speed? Some tools add a script to every page or make the page flicker before the variation shows.
  3. Will you add apps to our store? Every new app should earn its place in sales, not just in features.
  4. Do you judge tests on revenue per visitor? A discount can lift conversion rate while cutting revenue.
  5. What happens at the next theme update? Custom changes have to survive it, or be rebuilt.
  6. Can we test with our traffic? An honest answer sometimes says fix it, do not test it.
  7. What does it cost, and what is included? Convertica explains its pricing up front: the audit is free, and advisory is quoted after it.

Can AI agents read your Shopify store?

AI agents can usually read what a Shopify theme renders, because Shopify builds the page on its servers before it reaches the browser. The risk is everything added later by app scripts: review stars, badges, delivery estimates and sometimes prices. If an agent reading the page HTML cannot find them, it cannot pass them on to the shopper it works for.

  • Check that your theme outputs product structured data, and that it matches the price and stock on the page.
  • View the page source and look for your price, variants, reviews and delivery promise. Anything missing is invisible to an agent that does not run scripts.
  • Put shipping and returns rules in plain text on the product page, not only on a policy page.
  • Review your robots.txt template so the AI crawlers you want are allowed in.

Agent readiness is one of the eight checks in Convertica's free CRO audit, and in CRO advisory Kurt Philip reviews it with you. Nobody has years of data on AI shopping agents yet, including Convertica, so treat it like the rest of CRO: check, fix what is clearly broken, measure.

What Convertica does for Shopify stores, and what it does not

Convertica offers Shopify stores a free CRO audit, CRO advisory and full implementation. Advisory is priced after your audit, led personally by Kurt Philip with Convertica's CRO team, and places are limited.

  • You get a ranked view of what is costing your store sales, for shoppers and for AI agents, and, in advisory, direction on which template, app or offer to change and how to read each test.
  • Who builds: in advisory, your developer, Shopify agency or team builds the changes. With full implementation, Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit, priced after your audit.
  • You do not get a guaranteed lift. Nobody can honestly promise one before seeing your data.

Shopify CRO FAQ

What is Shopify CRO?

Shopify CRO, short for Shopify conversion rate optimization, is the work of turning more of a Shopify store's visitors into buyers. It finds where shoppers drop out between the collection page and the completed checkout, works out why, and fixes or A/B tests changes to the theme, the apps and the offer. The method is the same as any ecommerce CRO, applied within Shopify's limits.

What does a Shopify CRO expert do?

A Shopify CRO expert reads your Shopify analytics and behavior data, finds the theme templates and funnel steps that lose the most revenue, ranks the fixes, and plans A/B tests that work within Shopify's theme and checkout rules. Some also build the changes. Convertica's advisory is led personally by Kurt Philip while your developer or Shopify agency builds, and with full implementation Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit.

Do I need a Shopify CRO agency or a Shopify CRO expert?

Hire a done-for-you Shopify CRO agency, or ask about Convertica's full implementation, if nobody can edit your theme or install and configure apps for you. Choose a Shopify CRO expert or advisory if you already have a developer, a Shopify agency or a capable team, and what is missing is knowing which change to make next and reading test results honestly.

Can you change the Shopify checkout?

Partly. On every plan you can set checkout options and branding in Shopify's settings and add approved apps, and you fully control what comes before the checkout: product pages, collections and the cart. Deeper changes to the checkout steps themselves are reserved for Shopify Plus. That is why most Shopify CRO work happens before the checkout.

Do I need Shopify Plus for CRO?

No. Most conversion problems on Shopify stores sit on the product page, the collection pages and the cart, which every plan can change. Shopify Plus adds deeper checkout customization, which matters mainly when research shows the checkout itself is where shoppers leave.

Do Shopify apps hurt conversion rates?

They can. Many apps add scripts to every storefront page, which slows loading, and some leave code in the theme after they are uninstalled. Apps that insert prices, reviews or badges with scripts can also hide that content from AI agents. Review your apps regularly, and test any app that changes the product page or cart before you keep it.

Why do Shopify theme templates matter for CRO?

Because one template change reaches every page that uses it. A Shopify product template usually serves every product, so adding a size guide or moving reviews next to the Add to Cart button changes the whole catalog at once. A mistake spreads just as far, which is why template changes are worth testing.

How much does Shopify CRO cost?

Convertica's CRO audit is free. CRO advisory is priced after your audit, based on what the audit finds. Shopify CRO agencies price per month, per project or per test, so ask each one what is included and who builds the tests in your theme. The Convertica pricing page explains how its pricing works.

Does Convertica build the changes for my Shopify store?

It can. With full implementation, Convertica's team builds the fixes from your audit for you. With CRO advisory, you get ongoing direction from Kurt Philip, with Convertica's CRO team, and your developer, your Shopify agency or your own team edits the theme and runs the tests. Both are priced after your audit.
